Τhe Island which offers itself for peaceful holidays, the island where Aphrodite the goddess of beauty came forth from the waves to be then led to Cyprus. The Aphrodite of love, the Pandemos, was worshipped from old in Cyprus. Aphrodite Ourania (the heavenly), goddess of dreamlike eternal love, was worshipped where she was born, in Kythira. Romanticism, which flourished at the beginning of the 19th century, presented Kythira as an imaginary dreamlike destination, a destination which the visitor enjoys by wandering over the island, getting to know the villages, nature and the golden beaches with their crystalline waters.
Kythira lies to the south of the Malea promontory at a distance of 9 nautical miles from Neapolis Vion and 7 nautical miles from the nearest point on the coast of the Peloponnese. It has an area of 280km², 3,500 inhabitants and belongs to Attica administratively, although the latter is 110 nautical miles away. The capital is Kythira (Chora) and its port is at Kapsali on the southern end of the island. Ferryboats land at the harbour of Hagia Pelagia, 25 km north of Chora. The journey can be made by hydrofoils from Piraeus, by ferryboat from Neapolis Vion, or by aeroplane.
