Lesvos

A few words about Lesvos

The island of beauty and harmony. "A ship adorned with flowers that carelessly sails through the sea", as described by Stratis Myrivilis.  Lesvos with its 1630km2 and Geras and Kalloni, the two bays that determine its unique shape.

Every morning the light skims across the waveless water surface, a mirror of unprecedented colors.  A beautiful crust, silvery green, made of pine trees, olive trees and oak that covers most of this blessed place. The links between the rich historical and cultural heritage remain intact from antiquity and up to the present days.  Nature has been very generous on this island.  The proof is the many hot springs, the dreamy beaches, the unique petrified giant sequoia forest, covered by lava 15-20 million years ago and brought to the surface by seismic activity.  The last discovered invaluable gift of nature are the Vrissa paleontological fossils; among the most important findings are the jaws and bones of a very rare species of giant apes, the earliest representative age ever found in Europe.

Beaches

Valoutsas
The wonderful Valoutsas beach is usually deserted since it is very difficult to get there by conventional car.

Vatera
The endless 8km long and 12-meter wide beach of Vatera is 50km southwest of Mytilini.  This is the island?s longest and one of the most beautiful beaches. Cosmopolitan, it is well organized and protected from the NW summer winds. The fine golden sand and crystal-clear water attract many swimmers. The beach chairs offer relaxation and the umbrellas protect from overexposure to the sun.  There are facilities for all water sports on the beach.  The European Union awards the Blue Flag to Vatera every year and its classification as amongst the 10 better beaches in Greece by the Greek Tourist Organization is an attestation as to its high quality.

Kanoni
This is the beach of Thermi that got its name from the large cannon (kanoni) installed here during WW1.  Its special feature is the golden sand that stretches 60 meters inland and its shallow crystal-clear blue water. An ideal beach for children.  Along the main road, there are many restaurants and nice rental rooms and hotels.

Petra
One of the most beautiful beaches on the island it is 55km northwest of Mytilini, next to the village with the same name.  The golden sandy beach with the exquisite blue water stretches along the main road.  This is a popular beach, rather well organized and ideal to enjoy all pleasures of the sea.  It is equipped with umbrellas, beach chairs, showers, locker rooms and a variety of restaurants, fish taverns, accommodation, and cafés.   More taverns are to be found in the beautiful village.  You will be surely impressed by the awesome sunsets in this beach.

Skala Eressou
The famous beach of Skala Eressou, which deservedly holds the European Blue Flag award, stretches along 4km of coastline.  Covered with golden sand, it is one of the most beautiful on the island, 92km northwest of Mytilini.  The clear blue water invites you to take an enjoyable dip.  Relax in the beach chairs under the umbrellas and enjoy the water sports, such as canoe, pedal boat, banana and windsurf as one can rent all the equipment here.  There are many restaurants and bars along the beach with a beautiful view of the sea.

Skala Kalonis
Just 44km northwest of Mytilini, the Skala Kalonis beach with its soft golden sand, the clear, shallow blue water and very good organization with beach chairs and umbrellas to rent, is very popular and draws a great number of visitors during the summer months.  There are traditional fish taverns and cafés along the coast, which operate as bars in the evening and a plethora of tourist facilities.

Skala Sykamias

Just 49km northwest of Mytilini, at the northernmost section of the island.  The beach combines sand and pebbles with clear blue water.  The seaside chapel of Panagia Gorgona with the lovely boats bobbing on the water in front of it adds a fairy tale beauty to the scenery.

Tsonia
Red-black volcanic pebbles and crystal blue water make up the scenery of this majestic beach, an ideal place for water sports. Small, traditional taverns offer fish and seafood.  An enjoyable experience would be to cross the narrow passage between Lesvos and Asia Minor where the view of the mountain villages and the lacy coastline will surely thrill you.  It is very possible that seagulls and playful dolphins will accompany you along the way.
