Rhodes

A few words about Rhodes

Rhodes: The island of the sun and the sea, dedicated from ancient times to the light-giving Apollo.

Lucian (an ancient writer) refers to it as ?as beautiful as the sun?, and Lamartine wrote ?in all the world I have been to nowhere did I see a more beautiful sky nor a more fertile land?. It is an island of 95,000 habitants, cosmopolitan, which charms visitors with its history, the archaeology, the beaches and the nightlife, and offers hospitality to a million tourists a year.

Beaches

?Anthony Quinn? (Vayies)
This small rocky cove near Ladiko took its name from the well-known actor to whom the Junta (1967-1974) had given a coast area to thank him for producing the film ?The Guns of Navarone? with Gregory Peck and Irene Papa on Rhodes, and thus making the island known to millions of people.

Aphandou
This is a superb pebble beach with an open deep sea and excellent taverns and restaurants. There is also Afandou Golf Course for the lovers of that game. There is even a little wheeled train connecting the village with the beach every hour.

Ayios Yoryios
This is a beach with perfect wet sand and cedar trees. It took its name from the chapel of St George built in the middle of nowhere as we follow the mud track which leads there.

Faliraki

This 4km long beach of golden sand with its blue and white umbrellas, and colourful deck-chairs offers all you need for all sorts of sea sports, water skiing, windsurfing, and jet skis, along with go carting, tennis and bungee jumping. At the southern end of the bay there is an organized nudists? beach with deck chairs and umbrellas.

Glyphada

This is a very wild beach with rocks, strong winds, superb deep green water, pines and two small taverns. For lovers of nature in the wild, it is ideal.

Ialysos
This is a vast, fully organized beach with luxury hotels, beautiful gardens, swimming pools and tennis courts. Cafeterias, restaurants, mini-markets, and surfing equipment suppliers can all be found at a short distance. The winds in the area favour the lovers of windsurfing.

Ixia
A modern holiday resort, with luxury hotels and restaurants suitable for all ages and tastes. This fantastic beach with its turquoise water lies only 5km from the mountains of opposite Turkey. The small waves caused by the meltemi wind are ideal for those who love wind-surfing. Jet skis, surfing boards and pedilloes can be hired from shops in the area.

Kallithea
This is a famous beach and meeting place for the elite of Rhodes. Its proximity to the town and the superb baths with mosaics and palm-trees constructed by the Italians make it especially attractive.

Ladiko
This is a small cove with all that can be offered. There is fine sand, rocks, beach umbrellas, deck-chairs and seafood taverns for you to enjoy Greek snacks. The beach becomes very crowded in August, and the deck chairs reach the other side right up to the rocks for those who want to enjoy the sea and the sun in peace.

Prasonisi
This is a paradise for surfers, especially in July and August when the meltemi winds are blowing. Surfing boards and outfits can be hired.

Rhodos City Beach

This is one of the most photographed beaches in Greece, as it preserves the cosmopolitan character of the 70s. The colourful umbrellas, the tall hotels, the casino and the aquarium in the background once made it the favourite subject of photographers.
