Kefalonia

A few words about Kefalonia

Kefalonia is an ideal destination if you desire peaceful holidays that will revive and relax you. The rare natural beauty of Kefalonia, with its green slopes and the famed fir forest of Mount Aenos  make unforgettable to any visitor.

Kefalonia has been characterized as "the island of strangeness" because of its peculiar geological structure, the unusual phenomena that have been recorded here since the depths of antiquity, and the eccentric nature of the inhabitants. The enigmatic phenomenon at Katavothres, where the water of the north side of the island at Argostoli come out on the opposite side in the gulf of Sami has aroused the interest of many scientists who have tried for years to find explanations for these geological paradoxes.

On the other hand, the visitor is impressed by the eccentric character of the Kefalonians who combine finesse and politeness, a cultural and artistic nature with the explosive temperament, the eccentricity, spicy humour and sarcastic behaviour.

Beaches

Alaties

This beach has an amazing view over the Ionian Sea, especially from on high, bathed by the sun. It is relatively small and pebbly, and you can enjoy diving into the open Ionian from the rocks.
There are two disadvantages: firstly it often gathers seaweed and pitch, and diving needs care as strong currents have been observed in the area. Apart from that, it is organised and has a small tavern for lunch or an evening meal.

Antisamos

This is one of the island's most beautiful beaches, and, fortunately for some, not especially frequented. It recently became famous as it was of the scenes of filming for "Captain Corelli's Mandolin".

Assos

Assos beach is perfect for families with children. The morphology is such that it more resembles a lake and it is safe because of the shallowness of the water. It has pebbles though the sea bed is sandy. It is in the centre of the village, while all around are picturesque buildings serving as cafes. If you want something more isolated, you can hire a boat which will take you to nearby quiet beaches in the area.

Foki
This beach is near Fiskardo and you will have a good view of Ithaki while swimming in the clear water of the bay.
The natural surroundings are a dense forest of cypresses and olive trees which reach the edge of the water. The beach is pebbly while to the right there are large rock slabs. It is shallow and completely safe, but don?t be afraid of the seaweed. It is not well-organised, but has a tavern and a car park and you may have a problem during the peak tourist season.

Kaminia

This is a beach where the sea turtle Caretta caretta seeks refuge when it returns each three years to the beach where it was born so as to lay its own eggs, sometimes covering thousands of miles. The water is warm and shallow, and the sand golden.

Makris Gialos

This is the most frequented and popular beach on the island, drawing thousands of holiday-makers each year. This is because of its size (which is what the name means in Greek), its crystal clear water and the ease of access, situated as it is on the road between Argostoli and the airport. It is very well-organised, but also has great beauty with a view over the endless blue Ionian Sea with the green pines behind.

Myrtos

Myrtos beach is in fact one of the sights of Kefalonia. It is enough to say that each year it is awarded with the title "Best Beach in Greece". The unusual land environment in combination with the green or blue waters (it is difficult to determine with colours the play of the sun on the sea) cause awe and wonder to visitors. Access is easy and safe, but swimming needs some care as the sea deepens sharply and there are strong currents.
