Zakynthos lies in the Ionian Sea, south of Cephallonia and west of the Peloponnese at a short distance from Cape Kyllene in the prefecture of Elis. "Hylessa" (the forested) for Homer, "Flower of the East" for the Venetians, "Bride of the Ionian", "Florence of the East","Small Paris" for the Greeks.
Zakynthos combines unique natural beauty, arts and letters, miles of golden beaches, night life, wonderful possibilities for isolation, accommodation in high class hotels, seaside and mountain villages with scenes from past epochs and monuments, all together in an indescribable natural and intellectual treasure.
Ayios Sostis (Hagios Sostes)
This is one of the most picturesque spots on the island. The pine-covered islet of Ayios Sostis can be found on the left side of the bay of Laganas. It was joined to the mainland until 1622 when it was separated by an earthquake. Now it is privately-owned, and joined to the mainland by a large wooden bridge. A nightclub operates on the island in summer.
Alykes
The large clean sandy beach of Alykes has been developed into a tourist resort for the lovers of fun and adventure in its central portion, while a little further away, those who want peace and quiet can still find it. There are possibilities of sea sports and deck-chairs and umbrellas are on hire.
Ammoudi
This picturesque beach is a continuation of the large beach of Alykes. Anyone who prefers peace and quiet away from the crowds and intense life of the centre of Alykes can always find refuge at Ammoudi.
Kalamaki
This is a beautiful wide beach with warm shallow waters, one of the places chosen by caretta-caretta to lay its eggs. The clay rocks which rise and shine in fantastic shapes in the crystal waters are most impressive. There are some seaside restaurants which close at sunset.
Laganas
This beach 9 kilometres in length is one of the largest in Greece. The turtle caretta-caretta has chosen it as one of its refuges. To protect it, the bay of Laganas and all the surrounding areas have been declared a National Marine Park, and since then new building has ceased, while engine-based sea sports have been forbidden. Three small islands lie in Laganas bay: Pelouzo, Marathonisi and Ayios Sostis.
Limni Keriou
This picturesque beach of the village of Keri is also called Limni Keriou from a lake which used to be there. The traditional taverns, the pretty bars, the diving schools, and the small boats for a ride to Marathonisi and the Blue Caves offer many possibilities. If you want to explore the area, you will discover small pebbly or rocky coves for being alone in.
Navayio (Shipwreck)
It is the most photographed beach in Greece. It owes its name to the adventure of a ship that was smuggling cigarettes and sank in the waters near the shore. The view is really impressive. Between the high white rocks lies a beach of pure white sand, deep clear waters and the hull of the ship stuck in the sand. It can only be approached from the sea by boat from the harbour of St Nicholas Volimon, Porti Vromi or making a trip round the island by boat from Zakynthos town or Laganas bay.
